Design of Optimal L 1 Stable IIR Digital Filter using Real Coded Genetic Algorithm

Abstract— A real coded genetic algorithm is applied for designing infinite impulse response (IIR) filter based on L1approximation error criterion. The proposed real coded genetic algorithm, which is a technique for optimization inspired by genetics and natural evolution method, enhances the search capability and provides a fast convergence for calculating the optimal filter coefficients. The filter designed based on L1approximation error possesses flat passbands and stopbands to that of the least square design. A comparison has been made with other design techniques, demonstrating that the real coded genetic algorithm obtains better or at least comparable results for designing digital IIR filters than the existing genetic algorithm based methods.
